1600, 31st Dec: The Company is founded and receives the royal charter from Queen Elizabeth I. It was to be the The Governor and Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies. Akbar is the emperor in India.
1611: The Company sets up its first factory (trading post) at Masulipatnam in present day Andhra Pradesh. Masulipatnam was then the principal port of the Sultanate of Golconda. The port is an important gateway for trade in cotton textiles. The kingdom is happy to have them because it brings greater trade, and hence greater revenue. (The Dutch VOC is already operating there since 1605).
1613: A factory at Surat is set up. Permission is received from the then emperor, Jahangir.
